About Take Notice

‘Take Notice: Amplifying Black Stories’ was created with the intent to connect, provide resources, and inspire personal growth. I grew up in predominantly suburban and rural areas of Western Washington with some but not much cultural diversity. It wasn’t until I had the opportunity to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I participated in conversations around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, that I began to learn how much I didn’t know about the lived experiences of people of color in our country and around the world.

My education on these topics began to deepen a few years later when I met who is now my husband. We had different upbringings. We had conversations about the many times he was mistreated in school and harassed by authorities because of the color of his skin. We encountered situations I had never been confronted with as a mixed-race couple. I soon began to seek out ways to educate myself further. Once you see, you cannot unsee.

Eventually, I got curious about the impact the conversations between my husband and I could have on others. The potential for change can come from just one person’s story, whether it's a shared experience or unfamiliar. The idea of a podcast came to mind. The pandemic created the space to get started while the murder of George Floyd and ensuing marches and demonstrations held the inspiration to take action.

‘Take Notice: Amplifying Black Stories’ began in October 2020 after months of learning about podcasting and conversations on how to approach the project. Our first season shared personal stories from thirteen guests from around North America. We have now released over 40 episodes and counting. Take Notice is continually evolving by listening to feedback and searching for ways that the podcast can be more inclusive, reach more listeners, and build community.
